Server upgrade to subversion 1.5?
| RoystonS 3 post(s) |
Hi there, Apologies if this has already been asked & answered but I couldn’t find it anywhere on here… Is there any estimate of when the Assembla SVN servers will be upgraded to Subversion 1.5.x? Whilst we can use 1.5 clients with Assembla’s current 1.4 servers, features such as the new merge tracking only work if the server is also 1.5 Thanks, Royston. |

As I know subversion 1.5 server is not compatible with older clients, most Linux distros still use older versions of subversion. We can not force all our users to upgrade. |

You don’t need to force people to upgrade: you can happily use v1.4 and older clients with v1.5 servers. You can even use v1.5 servers with v1.4 repositories with any clients. Upgrading servers to 1.5 doesn’t force clients to use client 1.5 (which is why other hosting environments such as CVSDude have already upgraded their servers to 1.5.) Have a look at the compatibility matrix at http://subversion.tigris.org/svn_1.5_releasenot… Some features (e.g. merge tracking) require 1.5 client and 1.5 server and 1.5 repository, which is why there are even articles answering how you can forcibly prevent 1.4 (non-merge-aware) clients from connecting to a 1.5 repository if you want to. If you don’t do that, you can get 1.4 clients happily using your 1.5 server. But if you don’t want or need merge tracking, you can use a 1.5 server with a 1.4 repository with 1.3 (I think!) clients. |

You will not be able to use merge tracking with older repository format, other features will work with 1.4 server. |

What I meant was that you could upgrade Assembla SVN servers to 1.5 without forcibly upgrading everybody’s repositories or forcing people to use v1.5 clients. Individual projects could then choose to upgrade their repositories (by dumping and restoring) to 1.5 if they want to, or stay with a 1.4 repository (without merge tracking) if they want to. This is exactly what CVSDude and other SVN hosters are already doing. |

Please let us know what the stance on this issue is. If assembla.com is never planning on upgrading to subversion 1.5, or does not have a clear upgrade plan, then I am going to take my project repositories elsewhere. I’m very happy with assembla.com so far. This is the only sticky issue. |

Debian Lenny will contain subversion 1.5, when we will have time we will test the system with new version of OS and if all will be ok, we will upgrade tool servers. it can take up to 2 months. |
