Announcing the 2.0 release - Restricting free plans, giving back with features and price reductions replied by blusik

I don’t know if this is the best place to post this, but I just want to let you know that I’ve had to move my company’s repos to a competitor because of the new Assembla pricing structure. My company primarily used Assembla for SVN/Trac, but we’ve found some of the other tools useful. However, as it stood our repos were quoted at $43 a month by your migration tool and we were able to find a reputable competitor who can provide our SVN/Trac hosting for $99 a year. As a small business we can’t ignore that amount of savings. If you had provided a flat-rate option with limited repos (20), limited monthly bandwidth, limited number of users (10), a limited amount of storage (maybe 5GB), and the option to buy more repos, users, and storage as we needed, we could have stayed with Assembla.

Thanks for everything and good luck in the future.

Yeah, I read the blog afterwards as well which cleared up some other stuff – maybe link it in future emails.

My main concern was people outside the project being able to modify.

We’re open-source, and although it’s unlikely our code will be stolen, for the price it’s worth the peace of mind.

Upgrading now.

Upgrade Multiple Proljects - one monthly fee replied by sromano

First of all, to clarify things a bit. You will get one invoice per month for all the spaces you are currently paying, don’t matter if you upgrade them all in one page or from multiple places.

If you are the owner of some old private spaces which were not commercial, you can upgrade all at once from this page: http://www.assembla.com/spaces/migrate

If you have a public space and you want to upgrade it, you need to go to the space admin tab and click on the upgrade links. You will need to do this once for each space you want to upgrade. However, you will still pay one monthly fee as I said before.

Hope this answers your question

Announcing the 2.0 release - Restricting free plans, giving back with features and price reductions replied by sromano

“Public” means that you allow people who are not team members to see your space. This includes other Assembla users and anonymous users.

You control this with the permission drop-down on the Admin panel that says “Non Member access”. If this is set to “None”, your space is private. If this is set to “View” or “Edit”, your space is public.

“View” access does not allow changes by non-team members. So they can’t add new members or create/edit your Trac Tickets. If you are using our SVN/Trac tool, they will be able to see the Track Tickets and the code hosted in our tools. You can see a comparison between private/professional plans and free public plans in this page

I hope this answers your questions

Announcing the 2.0 release - Restricting free plans, giving back with features and price reductions replied by ijed

I’m looking at the plans offered under the new scheme for Assembla and there seems to be some ambiguity as to what is meant, and no obvious help page explaining the changes – clicking help reloads the page.

Specifically I mean the ‘visible’ status of a free public plan.

Does control of permissions being publicly visible make non-team members able to:

Change the team (eg. appoint new members)
Checkout the project via SVN
Commit the project via SVN
Read the Trac tickets
Create / edit the Trac tickets

We’re pretty happy with the service and prepared to pay if it’s best for our project – but apart from the extra features what exactly are we buying?

I can not afford to pay for my hosting nor can I allow my code to be made public as it contains non-GPL’ed code that can not be made public. I asked this previously and never received an answer. How does one delete a project? Neither solution is going to work for me.

Assembla servers will be down tomorrow, October 31, starting at 8:00 UTC, for a database upgrade. We expect the outage will last about 40 minutes.

www.assembla.com and subversion services will be off during this time.

Users in North America will not feel much affect, because it will be very early in the morning – 4:00 AM. However, this will affect users in Europe and Asia.

Announcing the 2.0 release - Restricting free plans, giving back with features and price reductions replied by chobo2

Hi

I am very disappointed in the so called “new improvements” this seems to be more restriction then improvements. I choose assembla because it was free, had unlimited users and you could make your stuff private for free.

Right now I am using assembla for personal projects(that will never make money just for learning) but mostly for school projects such as mrbatu. Thanks to these changes I am screwed since now I have to make all my projects public meaning that now anyone in my class can now go to my project steal all my code and I could get nailed for aiding plagiarism(and they don’t care if it is accidental plagiarsim) and be kicked out of the school.

Alot of people know I used subversion because I am a big promoter of it and this site. I always planned when I get out of school in a year and half and when I start doing contracting work I would buy a subscription to your service since I would be using it for commercial use(since I would have been using this service for like 2 years by then and would likely stick with what I know).

Now I get these changes without warning and if I just did not happen go to and delete an old workspace that I was not using to save you guys space I would have never known. I can’t afford to buy a subscription since I would not only have to buy a subscription for myself but each of my partners for my projects and most of them are just going along with using subversion because they know my programming skills are half decent(oppose to them who can’t program very well) and that they rather make me happy so I do more of the work. Image now I tell them oh each of you are going have to pay now for this service.

If I delete my subversion I loose all my changes and some of my on going projects for school are 15 weeks long that build on each other but as I stated before I now have to delete my accounts because the risk of being accused of plagiarism is just too high.

Bottom line I use to think this was the best subversion site around but now with these changes I am going to either just setup my own sever for personal use or try to find a new site that offers some sort of free stuff.

In the end you lost a future customer and probably many other customers since I am sure I would be doing alot of projects with other people who would also be paying also for the service and anyone else who I recommend this site too.

I’m a student and I use assembla (mostly svn and trac) to manage my class projects, homework, etc. As far as I know formerly assembla had special offers for such cases.

I agree with the suggestion that the payment should be linked with the disk-space usage rather than per-user basis. In our project we expect the number of users to fluctuate and we do not want to deal with the hassles of accounting and getting sanctions for changed number of users every few months. The charges for disk usage can be increased to compensate. May be even keep a baseline charge for until 200 MB and then increase it based on disk usage after that.

Another alternative could be have both charging approaches; let the owners decide what option works for them.

I am working for Attac Austria – a non-governmental alterglobalisation
organisation (www.attac.at, english:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_pour_l…).
The organisation is financed by its members and via donations. We have a
workspace on Assembla, Aktionsakademie to organize an Action-Academy in April next year.

We all appreciate that your organisation is supporting open-source
projects and is intending to charge commercial organisation a fee for
the services. In our case it is different and I wanted to ask you, if we
could keep our space private. We are no programmers. We use assembla to
organise our academy. The aim of the academy is to help all the
participants to deliver the Attac/alterglobalisation message to the
people. There will be different workshop so that all participants are
able to improve their practical and technical skills. There will also be
workshops on the topic of civil disobedience, which is the main point
why we want to keep our space private. Police surveillance and
oppression is rising all over the world and of course also in Austria.
Not to create a false impression: Attac is a nonviolent organisation,
but our topics are often frowned upon by the government.

I hope you understand our position and that you let us keep our private
workspace free of charge.

Guess that means we’re moving somewhere too, which is sad since I’m beginning to like Assembla. If you figure out more tactical packages for low space/bandwidth usage, high user count projects, let me know.

I’m not against paying for the service, but since we have many devs, each of which does not do a “majority” of the work, I suppose staying here is silly.

Thanks for the information.

The output is free and public (you can see for yourself), but the source code is not public. It will be private. Could you answer my above question with the understanding that the code will remain private?

Am I correct to assume the following?
- For every user I have, it will cost me $2 more per month?
- For every GB (does this include the first?), I will be charged an extra $3/mo?

So, if I have 15 megabytes and 12 users, I would pay $24 USD/mo? I’m currently running a non-profit project with a lot of volunteer contributers, so please let me know.
