I’m getting an error:
Server sent unexpected return value (400 Bad Request) in response to REPORT request fot ‘http://svn2.assembla.com/svn/Tesis’

On Sunday all stuff was good :(

The host is resolving properly… and i’m able to check out other projects, but these ones give the propfind error…
i downloaded the svn backups and loaded them into a new space but the same error appears when I try to check out from the new space

any suggestions?

Check dns for svn.assembla.com, it should resolve to IP: 75.101.138.90
Also you svn client should send http header:
Host: svn.assembla.com

We use EBS of all svn servers, but I wanted to build a network cluster FS with GlusterFS, it caused a lot of IO wait and I finally disabled it. We use c1.xlarge instance and it slowed down the whole server. Now svn.assembla.com is much faster.

We need it for our new code browser that will replace trac for users that want only subversion and integrated Assembla tickets, but we will use NFS.

benmmurphy: I don’t think so: problably they use EBS (Elastic Block Storage) which in turn uses S3, but who knows. EBS is a persistent storage for data in EC2 images, as far as I know.

EBS is somehow “higher level” than S3 and shouldn’t suffer from file locking issues…
I think the SVN issues may come from assembla’s custom subversion post hooks and/or Trac-subversion 1.5 integration.

is subversion sitting on top of S3FS? i’m not aware that S3FS currently supports file locking between processes. this seems to be a requirement for a number of the subversion backends. would this cause an issue?

Just check other hooks you may have, as I think that the feature of closing tickets when putting “closes #x” in svn comments may be failing (I tried to close a ticket this way few hours ago, but it wasn’t closed: the commit succeeded but the ticket was left open), altough I haven’t tried this since your post saying that trac-post-commit-hook was updated.

A comment in the page I posted before (http://ariejan.net/2007/05/21/merge-request-fai…) suggests that any hook can cause the svn: MERGE request failed error and recommends using svnserve to “debug” this:

svn: MERGE of ‘/svn/repository/trunk’: 200 OK (http://svn.myserver.com)
Notice the second line: 200 OK. That means that the actual commit went through ok, which led us to believe our issue had to do with our post-commit hook. We are not using trac’s post-commit hooks, but instead our own, which had an issue with wget. So if you get that error, I would suggest you run svnserve and try to checkout/commit via that, because it will give you a better error message to diagnose the issue.

My team is also having problems using assembla’s svn. Synchronising with the svn repository takes at least a few minutes. Committing changes also takes minutes. And just now, my commits have all come back as conflicts – but the compare editor in my IDE seems to say the commits were successful.

When will SVN be fixed?

It seems that for small files the updates/commits are almost at zero speed and on large files the speed is good.

They say that upgrading trac-post-commit-hook should fix it. This fix seems to be included in Trac 0.10.5dev, but assembla currently uses 0.10.4. Not sure, but I think this can only be fixed by assembla admins.

okobloko: I think you have been lucky because you didn’t added new files to repository (only modified ones), is it right?

I had modified and newly added files, so when I did an svn update after the svn: MERGE error, it messed my working copy: some files were merged (the modified ones) and some other not: it said that they were non-versioned files in the working copy that had the same name than new files in repository…

So, I had to revert everything in working dir, delete files and directories with the ’!’ svn status (locally deleted by other tools than subversion) and do another svn update.

May the svn: MERGE request failed related to using an svn 1.4 client with a svn 1.5 server (I think assembla switched to Subversion 1.5 in the ec2 transition)?

Another idea: in my assembla repository, I think I have some properties of the svnmerge.py command (http://www.orcaware.com/svn/wiki/Svnmerge.py) in some of my dirs, that this tool uses to keep track of already merged revisions (svnmerge-integrated), blocked revisions, etc. Maybe this properties interfere with how svn 1.5 manages it’s new merge tracking support?
